MENTAL HEALTH HUT

What does Perseverance mean?

To Persevere – is to continue in a course of action even in the face of difficulty with little or no sight of success. Despite the challenges, we continue on with positivity. Many humans use faith or other practices to not give up when they reach an obstacle.

Studies have found a huge correlation between perseverance and mental health – fewer people experienced depression and anxiety.

Why is perseverance important in mental health?

Perseverance is important in LIFE, but when it comes to our Mental Health journey, it truly becomes a tool for survival. Regardless of whether you are diagnosed, self-diagnosed, or simply HUMAN – life has many phases. Some of these phases may come with strong emotions/thoughts. Which may fog your mind. At that moment, we MUST persevere – becoming aware of our mental and overall state.

At HighTides, we like to take a step back and then determine what our next step should be in order to start a positive domino effect.

OH! Let’s say that you don’t get it right the first time – that’s where you start finding another way.

Above all, do not give up – ESPECIALLY when you want to.

What are the benefits of perseverance?

  • Relaxation – helps ease anxiety, stress, and anger.
  • Awareness – the mind-body connection
  • Processing emotions and healing trauma and/or pain
  • Boosts energy and Immune System function

Quick Reminder: Take a step back, take 3 deep breaths, and focus on what you CAN control.

TIDAL WAVES

This edition’s poem was inspired by the power of perseverance. Let’s take a deep breath – inhale, hold for 3 seconds, and exhale.

The Gift of Life

we are born with the gift of life
the breath
upon our first breath
our body adapts to the changes
 nine months of preparations
learning closely from our mother
the breath fuels our body
we live until our last breath

our breath is the gift of life
the breaths taken
between the first and the last
are the sweetest ones of all

just breathe - just live

- She Who Lives

WHO SAID WHAT

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

– Mahatma Gandhi

DRIFT AWAY

Take a deep breath – inhale, hold for 3 seconds, and exhale. Allow yourself to connect with the passage and share your takeaway with someone you know.

Breathwork

I would like you to focus on your breath. Close your eyes and just really tune into your breathing. How fast are you breathing? How deep are you breathing? Often, we get so caught up in the daily tasks that we forget to breathe. Many will say, “I breathe every day,” to which I will respond – do you really?

  • Did you bring your focus to yourself? Most importantly, your breath?
  • Are you breathing in a way you are able to control or regulate your airflow?
  • Are you paying attention to how your body reacts to each breath you take?
  • Are you truly allowing yourself to connect with your mind + body?

That being said, let’s try another quick breathwork exercise – just give it a shot! No matter where you are. No matter what you are doing – take a moment. Stand still and allow yourself to be present – you are here! Let’s start by taking a deep breath: – slowly INHALE, allowing the air to flow in through your nose and fill your core. – Feel your core expanding and HOLD for 5 seconds. – slowly exhale as if you were blowing a bubble – LET IT OUT – Repeat 3x.

WRITER NOTES

I was going back and forth on what I would be writing about next. Until I decided that it would be inspired by a single word – “Persevere” I was inspired by my affirmation bracelet that was selected by Sage – a 5-year-old Entrepreneur owner of “Sage Oava” (@sage_oava).

I have been wearing it regularly as a reminder to keep working towards my goals. We all have plenty on our plates, and some days are easier than others. What matters is that you can go to sleep every day knowing that you did something towards your goal (big or small) that day!

Breathe and stay consistent.
