MENTAL HEALTH HUT

What is anxiety?

A state of persistent and excessive worry and fear that interferes with one’s life may also result in physical symptoms.

Are panic attacks and anxiety attacks the same?

The difference between the two is the length of the symptoms.

For example:

Sam had just bought a house and is jumping with joy. Then suddenly, she was worried, which caused her to hyperventilate; but shortly, not even 25mins and she could regulate herself. She no longer feels worried or has a hard time breathing. – that’s a panic attack (severe symptoms/fast regulation/no prior anxiety)

Rosa is constantly feeling excessive worry and fear about everything! EVERYDAY! One day she realized she had left her wallet at home and started to have trouble breathing and immense worry. She was able to regulate her breathing, but she was still anxious. – anxiety attack (moderate symptoms/slow regulation/prior anxiety)

What can we do to help ease it?

  • Stay active – increasing your heart rate can produce serotonin, an anti-anxiety neurochemical.
  • Enough rest – 7hrs to 9hrs of sleep every day.
  • Meditation – becoming present and fully aware of your thoughts and emotions helps you feel more at peace and capable.
  • Deep Breathwork – focusing and controlling your breath helps you regulate your breathing pattern and reduce anxiety.

Remember to take a step back, take 3 deep breaths, and focus on what you CAN control.

TIDAL WAVES

This month’s poem was inspired by the anxiety birthed from the concept of time. Let’s take a deep breath – inhale, hold for 3secs, and exhale.

“time is a scary thing

we go living day by day

working SOOO hard to get away

in order to value…time

plenty of it is given away

believing we have enough time to waste

but do we have enough time?

what exactly is enough time?

enough time for what?

the fact that you woke up today and are reading this it means

you have time

use your time to live in the present.”

– She Who Lives

Just breathe. Just be.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

“Nothing can dim the light that

shines from within.”

– Maya Angelou

DRIFT AWAY

Take a deep breath – inhale, hold for 3secs, and exhale. Allow yourself to connect with the passage and share your takeaway with someone.

“Once upon a time, in a faraway land, lived a woman who controlled the weather with her emotions. On those days when she felt angry or irritated, the valley was welcomed with a storm. The valley was consumed by fog on days she felt lost or empty. The valley was glowing the days she felt the most joy. Until one day, she decided to control her emotions to have better days. Granted, not every day was Sunshine and Blue Skies, but she did her best to be present and live with gratitude.

Remember to focus on what you CAN control.”

One response to “February 2023 – What is Anxiety? What can we do to help ease it?”

  1. Breathwork and exercise are amazing. Couple that with good nutrition and rest and they’ll solve most of our everyday troubles. At least then, if the anxiety persists, we know that it’s more serious that everyday life. Nice post!
